We stopped for about fifteen minutes at a cascade between Upper and Middle Carthew lakes to filter water and refill our supply. We then began a steeper (but still very well-graded) descent down into the bowl of Alderson Lake, where we began to re-enter the trees. Alderson Lake looked very attractive, so we took a few minutes to take the spur trail to the Alderson Lake backcountry campsite, which also gave access to the lake's shoreline. The closeup view of the lake's clear waters, backed by the 2500-foot north face of Mt Alderson, was sublime.

Beyond Alderson Lake, the Carthew-Alderson trail entered the forest for good - save for a few open avalanche paths that provided the occasional view. A gentle grade and smooth footing allowed us to maintain a brisk walking pace, and we covered the 5km-ish distance from Alderson Lake to the junction with Cameron Creek in just over an hour.
