Poke-O-Moonshine is a low mountain on the extreme northeastern fringes of the High Peaks region. It sits immediately adjacent to the I-87 northway about twenty miles south of Plattsburgh and is only about 5 miles inland from Lake Champlain. The trailhead(s) are accessible via the parallel highway of US-9, not on I-87 itself. Poke-O-Moonshine has two trails leading to its summit - a shorter, steeper variant, known as the Ranger Trail (about 1.4 miles long), and a longer, gentler ascent on old jeep roads (about 2.4 miles long). The trailheads are about a mile apart from each other. The shorter route is more interesting, and, as of 2018-2019, greatly renovated and improved, with long sections of excellent rock-step trailwork. The mostly-treed summit has an open bare bedrock ledge and a firetower, and there are several other lookouts and scenic ledges, including a very nice one that looks southwest and is especially good during fall color viewing season.
