Mount Haystack is a very, very nice mountain. It is among the highest of the Adirondack peaks, but, owing to the relatively long distance required to get to it, does not see a lot of traffic (compared to, say, Algonquin). Haystack has extensive above-treeline terrain, and has superb views of Mount Marcy (which is on the other side of the yawning maw of Panther Gorge, which separates the two peaks), and many other of the surrounding High Peaks. Haystack sports interesting and challenging trails leading up to it from the southwest and northeast. Little Haystack, a subsidiary nubble of Haystack, is quite interesting and scenic in its own right. A long trek to this peak, anyway you slice it, but worth it! Save for a non-cloudy day!
