Gray Peak is a trailless peak immediately adjacent to Mount Marcy. Even though it is relatively high altitude for the Adirondacks, its summit is still completely treed. However, there are several good lookouts, and that, coupled with its execellent position relative to the other peaks, makes for a very scenic summit. The two common routes to it are from the ridge separating it from Marcy and via a route from Lake Tear of the Clouds. The herdpath from Lake Tear of the Clouds leaves just below the outlet of the lake, along Feldspar brook. There is a small cairn marking the start of the path. The herdpath from here is very followable, very well-trodden.

The route from the summit of Gray to Marcy is less well-defined, but still reasonably so. The sure-fire way to follow it is to start from the summit of Gray and head towards Marcy. There are several nice viewpoints along the way, and, although relatively easy to follow, it is brushy in places. From the Marcy side, there is a cairn right at treeline marking the route. If coming down from Marcy this may be difficult to find. Refer to my GPS tracklog of my Gray peak climb. It contains a tracklog which defines the route.
