Chapter 4
Aimless Wet Wanderings
Sunday, June 20
Sunday morning dawned... gray and rainy, again. Unfortunately. Although the forecast was now calling for a general clearing trend, it had not yet taken place, and we were unsure about what sort of outdoor activities this would permit us on this day. The first order of business, though, was to make a quick run to a nearby grocery store to stock our apartment with food for the next few days.
I had originally thought that today could be a day for an intro via ferrata climb for Graham and Alanna (they had never done one before). There was an interesting ferrata literally above our heads in the cliffs above Riva, but the low clouds and persistent drizzle probably meant no views and slippery holds. So, we decided against that. We started to lean more towards simply chilling out for the day and wandering around the old center of Riva. All of us except one, however: Pu was restless and felt he had to do something more substantial, so after hearing our plans, he announced that he was splitting off and doing his own thing - likely renting a bike and touring around.
Partially owing to the fact that it was still early in the season, and (probably mostly) to the fact that it was a gray and rainy day, there weren't too many people about as we walked through the narrow laneways of Riva's old center. We wandered down to the waterfront, observing graceful swans in the lake, then paid the one euro fee to climb the historic Apponale Tower in the piazza next to the water. The tower is quite old, dating back to somewhere in the 1200s. At the top is a great spot to take in panoramic views of the orange slate roofs of the crowded buildings below and of the mountain and lake scenery all around.
We continued our leisurely walk around town, following the lakefront for a bit, past the old La Rocca castle, now home to a civic museum containing various archaeological artifacts and other exhibits.
