This page tells the story of our 2005 Italy trip. Now, before you get started, be warned! There are almost one thousand different pictures hidden away in the links below.

The 'Main Story' link below is a general account of the entire trip, with a liberal sprinkling of pictures throughout the account. However, there were many excellent pictures that didn't fit well into the main story. You'll find many of these extra pictures in the subject-specific links below. Have a look at these when you want to see more detail for a particular region or subject.
Main Story
Start off with the narrative of our three-and-a-half week trip.
Family
If you are interested in a more in-depth picture collage of my relatives in Italy, have a look at this section. (contains 21 more pictures above and beyond those in the main story)
Monte Cervialto
A supplemental and more complete picture set of our hike up Monte Cervialto, the highest peak in the Picentini mountains near Avellino. (contains 17 more pictures above and beyond those in the main story)
Destructor and Destructee
If you enjoyed the section on Herculaneum and Vesuvius in the main narrative, then have a look at this section. It contains a more complete picture set of our visit to both Herculaneum and Vesuvius. (contains 30 more pictures above and beyond those in the main story)
The Italian Versailles
The Palace of Caserta. Truly a monumental place. There were so many beautiful pictures, I couldn't hope to place them all into the main story. Have a look at this section to view many more pictures of the palace and its grounds. (contains 44 more pictures above and beyond those in the main story)
Mediterranean Jewels
A supplemental and more complete picture set of our visit to the Amalfi Coast and the Island of Capri. (contains 22 more pictures above and beyond those in the main story)
The National Park of the Majella
An in-depth picture set of our visit to the National Park of the Majella in the Abruzzo province, and our climb of Monte Amaro, its highest peak. (contains 32 more pictures above and beyond those in the main story)
The Eternal City
A supplemental and more complete picture set of our visit to Rome. (contains 20 more pictures above and beyond those in the main story)

An in-depth picture essay on our visit to three delightful Tuscan cities: Siena, San Gimignano, and Florence. (contains 61 more pictures above and beyond those in the main story)
La Serenissima
Ah, Venice - the Serene Republic. A truly magical place, worthy of a thousand pictures. Fortunately for you, I've weeded it down to a manageable 43 or so! Check this section out to see them. (contains 26 more pictures above and beyond those in the main story)
The 51st Biennale
If you liked what you saw of the Biennale in the Main Story, then check out this section. I have a much more complete set of pictures of all of the quirky modern art we saw at this most famous of modern art exhibits.
Ten Days on Iron Ways
The centrepiece of our trip was a ten-day exploration of the Via Ferratas of the Italian Dolomites. Only a few of the pictures from the dolomites made it into the Main Story, so click here if you want to see a much more complete set. (contains 271 more pictures above and beyond those in the main story)
Mountaineering in the Ortles
A supplemental and more complete picture set of our intro mountaineering outing in the Ortles. This trip marked Jenn's first true mountaineering outing. See her step onto a glacier for the first time! (contains 64 more pictures above and beyond those in the main story)
Gottfried's Excellent Adventure
Although you didn't see it in the main story, a mysterious fellow named Gottfried followed us around. Have a look at this section. We captured shots of him just about everywhere - a veritable Austrian Waldo!
Maps, Graphs and GPS Data
A central repository of all of the elevation profiles, annotated topographic maps, and GPS tracklogs of our climbs and hikes.
