There is a route known as the Lillian Brook route, but I've not personally taken it.  If you google for it, you'll find descriptions, I'm sure.

Hi there.

Thanks for the compliments on the site. My understanding is that in winter, the road is not open and/or plowed all the way to the end. So, the extra distance is always going to be a factor in the winter.

Skiing is definitely a reasonable option if conditions are good. Also, don't forget that sometimes the trail is broken out - and if it is, you will find that you make much better progress. Also, different snow conditions will allow different rates of progress. Your experience will likely vary each time you try it!

I suggest looking online in the various adirondack / NE mountain forums to see if you can figure out if someone has broken out the trail.

#8  Dix loop from Elk Lake

I just returned from Dix. We wanted to do the same loop you did in July 2004, except in the other direction (BeckHorn, Dix, then the loop to Hough and Macomb). The road from Clear pond to Elk lake was closed, adding 6km to an already daunting 20km in deep snow. We got to 50m below Beckhorn, 200m horizontal. It was already close to 2pm (we had departed at 8AM), deep snow, unbroken path, exhaustion and we had to renounce in front of that last wall of knee-deep snow. Bummer!
We managed back to the car before night, after 26km of hard work. Now I want to do it all again! Next time, either we camp into the Slide Brook lean-to, and do the loop in a day, or ski from the car to the lean-to then switch to snowshoes.

Do you know where we can get info about the road from Clear Pond to Elk Lake?

BTW your site is fantastic, thank you for that.

hmm... can't remember precisely, but yes, I am confident there is some way up / around it. A bit of bushwacking at the very least would do it, I assume.

Just completed Dix, Up Beckhorn and return via Hunters
Pass. We just enjoyed your photos.
I rate the view from Dix as best I've had in the
Adirondacks......I'm 60 all others in my group
were in early 20's. When we go to the top of the
Beckhorn I couldnt make that final ledge and found
no sensible way around it. Finally the kids lowered
two walking sticks and pulled my 6 ft 1 200 lbs up and
over the edge. But had I been alone I would have
had to turn around at this point. Once on top of the
flat table of rock I was able to navigate the rest of the
bare rock up to the summit of the Beckhorn, but that one
ledge might have defeated me. My question, is there
a way around that mean spot ? Again thanks for
taking the time to post these photos, I will revisit this
site many times this coming winter to relive our hike.
THANKS !
