Enveloped by thick cloud, we turned west and followed a well-defined track along a grassy slope. This soon led to a gravelly area with red soil (a rare instance of non-dolomitic geology in this region), and soon after that, a low point at the top of a steep gully leading back towards our starting point. A finely-gravelled trail led down into this gully, steeply but always with decent footing.

Soon we reached the base of the cloud deck, and we could now see all the way to the valley bottom below. Many other hikers and climbers were descending this track, both from the Via Ferrata and from the nearby traditional climbing routes.

The gully descent was parallel to the via ferrata we had just climbed, and we could see most of the route - and climbers on it - as we descended.
In all, it took us a short 30 minutes to descend all the way down to the gully (to the ruins of the old hospital, and a rejoining of our hiking route in).
Fifteen more minutes of brisk hiking brought us all the way back to the carpark.
