We had been visiting the Sanctuary for over an hour, and the afternoon was drawing on. Both for reasons of daylight and because my mom and my aunt expected us back by a certain time, it was time to start our walk back down to Mercogliano.
Back we walked to the top of the Sentiero dei Pellegrini, and down we went. This was Elvira's first experience with an extended descent, and she found the going (in sneakers) a little hard on her toes. As a result, we had a few bouts of backwards-walking.
We took far less breaks on the way back down (which was to be expected, of course), and we quickly descended down, across the many switchbacks of the Montevergine highway, then across the descending traverse southwest to Mercogliano. Our overall descent time was right around one hour and thirty minutes - a full hour faster than our ascent. And a good thing, too, for my cell phone rang just minutes before arriving back at the trailhead: my aunt, wanting to know how much longer we would be until arriving back home.

The interest in our hike completion time was likely related to the fact that we had a dinner date this night - with my cousin Gabriella and her husband Carmine. They had graciously invited us out to dinner at a local Avellino restaurant at 8pm that evening. Arriving back at our car at 5:30pm gave us more than enough time to make the twenty minute trip back to my Aunt's house, get cleaned up, and make our way downtown to the restaurant. Which, by the way, was called "blob". I kid you not.
Dinner at Blob
Blob turned out to be the Italian version of a kind of sports bar. Obviously no particularly interesting sports were ongoing this tuesday night, for the place was not especially full. We enjoyed a reasonably decent multi-course meal, and Carmine proved to be a most enthusiastic host, making many suggestions and encouraging us to try many different things off of his own plates.
My aunt Rosetta demonstrated her amazing ability to pack away a large amount of food - even though she is as short and small as my mother, she ate a full-course meal and devoured a large dessert afterwards, all without breaking a sweat!
