ROMAN ROAD + CROSSWALK This is a typical city street in Pompeii. The raised cross-stones are what passed for crosswalks in the Roman Empire. Also note the deep ruts that wheeled carts and chariots have made in the road between the crosswalk stones. [enlarge]

HOUSE OF THE FAUN One of the larger houses in Pompeii, occupying an entire block of the city. Many interesting rooms, atria, and gardens, many with well-preserved wall coverings, such as this one. [enlarge]

AMPHITHEATRE AT POMPEII This is the amphitheatre at Pompeii, noted for Gladatorial combat and for competitions between Pompeii and neighboring cities that sometimes turned ugly. [enlarge]

TEMPLE OF JUPITER One of the major temples in Pompeii, situated at the head of the main forum area. If you look very closely between the 2nd and 3rd columns (from the left), you can see a bust of the god Jupiter (use the 'enlarge more' button for a more clear view). CRATER RIM, MOUNT VESUVIUS The summit crater of Mount Vesuvius. Suprisingly steep walls. When we went, Vesuvius was quiet, with only a small fumarole visible. [enlarge]

AMALFI COAST The Amalfi coast is a rugged, section of Italian coastline not far south of Naples. The steep limestone cliffs and the quaint villages attached to them are very scenic. [enlarge]

AMALFI This is the town of Amalfi, one of the larger towns along this coast. [enlarge]

POSITANO One the most scenic settlements along the Amalfi coast is Positano. Houses here are built practically on top of one another - there is virtually no flat land. [enlarge]

SENTIERO DEGLI DEI Lorraine and I hiking on a loop that includes a trail called "the path of the gods". Starting from down near the shore, going high up, along a ways, and then back down a different route. [enlarge]
