The change of state to Virginia also heralded a change in the topography - where West Virginia was more about an endless landscape of crumpled, corregated topography, western Virginia was more about long straight eroded folds of thick geologic strata - eroded into a way where the landscape has formed into a series of long sharped-edged ridges and equally long and smooth-bottomed valleys. Long ridge, long valley, long ridge, long valley. And generally, the crossing of these ridges equalled.... twisties!

Goss Road Hairpin
It was getting on towards sunset, so while we still aimed to hit a few decent twisties, we were more looking for a place to stay at this point. I stopped and looked up some potential spots on my phone, and we settled on a reasonably-priced motel in Tazewell, Virginia. I remembered Tazewell well (ha, well - get it?) from the 2008 road trip, primarily because it was near a particularly superb stretch of highway - VA-16 (a.k.a. "The Back of the Dragon").

After checking into our motel (the Fincastle Motor inn in Tazewell), we headed back out for a quick dinner at a fast food joint, and a good washing of the cars at a local self-serve spray wash. And then, with everything all nicely de-grimed, we turned in for the third night on our road trip.
