Along the stretch of the Escalante River from Escalante town to UT-12, the deepest cut of the canyon is right at the start - at the Escalante town side. Ever so gradually, the walls above us were getting a little lower as we proceeded, the canyon a little wider, and the vegetation a little thicker. There were beautiful stands of Fremont Cottonwoods at regular intervals.

Late morning gave way to early afternoon, and despite leisurely breaks, we were approaching the confluence with Death Hollow by mid-afternoon. At 2:45pm, we saw an especially dense path of Cottonwood trees ahead, signalling our arrival.

Confluence Ahead
The confluence with Death Hollow was were we first met other people: two backpackers sunning themselves on a patch of sand. They had set up a camp just upstream of the confluence, and so we headed to a point downstream of the confluence to give them - and us - plenty of space between us. On a lovely spacious flat of sand underneath many cottonwood trees and out of sight of our neighbours to the west, we decided to set up camp.

It was nearly exactly 3pm when we arrived - a perfectly relaxed and unhurried time to be arriving at one's campsite.
