Italy - a land of contrast. During the five years in army service
during the second world war I travelled to many countries as a soldier. As a young man who had spent his life in the tranquil life
of a student I suddenly was completely thrust into a reality of
army life. In the summer of l943 I found myself immersed in the
wartime activities of the English situation. When the occasion
presented itself to serve in the Mediterrean area I jumped at the
chance and this resulted in almost a year of service in the base
operation of the Canadian Army. I am not surprised that you have
also fallen in love with the remarkable contrasts that that country
offers to the visitors. I read with much pleasure of your second
visit to the Dolomites. And I envied the fact that you are able to
enjoy so much of the natural beauty of that area. When I read of
your adventures it is almost as if I was also present absorbing the
beautiful views. Thanks for doing such a superb job of describing
your 14 days in the Dolomites so I could enjoy it also. DAD
