Inside the Bivacco
Inside the Bivacco on the summit. Amazingly enough, the fire tower on Mount Carelton in New Brunswick is yet still messier and more graffiti strewn than this place! [enlarge]

Valley of Dead Women
The broad, shadowed valley behind Jenn is known as the Valley of the Dead Women. (and, it is the valley that we hiked up once we reached the plateau, and, it is also our return route). [enlarge]

Permafrost features?
These look like permafrost-related pockmark features, but I am not sure if the ground in this area is cold enough for that. [enlarge]

The big descent
Having finished the walk along the plateau, we start the steep descent off the edge and down into the valley where the trailhead is located. [enlarge]

Jolly Italian Hikers
On the way down, we meet a large band of Italian hikers at the Fontana del Orso. They are headed up to the bivacco on the summit (although it seems a bit late and they have a long long way to go to get there). They are extremely friendly and generous and share sips of their excellent drinks, some of which have real kick! (nudge nudge, wink wink). [enlarge]

We descend through the band of thick forest below the alpine zone. [enlarge]

Camping Ursa Minore
This is our campsite in the town of Campo di Giove, with the Maiella mountains in the background on the right. A nice, low-cost and quiet campground this was. [enlarge]
