good to hear, seems only 2 ranges escaped real damage then, Whiteface and the Sewards
somewhere i seen photos of a few new slides on Whiteface though, or at lease old ones that grew
Hi, Thomas
There was no damage at all on the regular trails and herdpaths. They were in excellent shape. (I can think of only one fallen branch across the path). Seems like Irene did not hit Whiteface/Esther all that hard.
...Andrew
What did the trail damage on the section of the trail you did , and on the herd path on ester look like?
The area got devastated by Irene in certin spots, ive seen new slides all
over, and climbed part way up the waterfall slide on cascade (between the
lakes), its opened up alot, and the falls are actually impressive now,
similar to roaring brook falls on giant, tons of dead fall, and more
and more vertical the higher you go, to the point of extreme danger, not a
recommended climb
Hmm... new growth? How come there wasn't new growth in the years leading up to 2004....? Seems kinda arbitrary. But, maybe you are right. Also, maybe a few extra feet of snow would get you above the worst of it.
Already got my replacement binding/crampon for the broken lightning. They've changed the strap system, so I've got a mismatched-looking set now.
... I'm guessing you guys ran into new growth from 2004. Reminds me of the Vose Spur and Scar Ridge 'whacks from last summer. Yikes. I'm sure you guys dealt with it in great spirits! Oh boy, I just remembered, we're going to try to 'whack up to Green Mountain next week -- pray for us!
Re: the MSR crampon, they break at the grommet and at the most slender section underneath the shoe attachment. Extra grommets are available as emergency spares, FYI, but that doesn't guarantee a solution if the crampon itself cracks (you are way in, like I was last winter, just below Seymour when mine cracked). There's a lifetime guarantee and your retailer can send them in to get them repaired for free (hopefully you can get a loaner in the meantime). For what it's worth ...
Julie.
