Congratulations Andrew !
It's been great following you since 2005,or so.
I follow in your path, sir but far behind (#71).
Hope I bump in to you and Jenn again somewhere.
not a problime, look forward to seeeing mor trip reports, as your site has the best info on the high peaks of the north east, more usful then alot of guidbooks, considering my sisters not so great hiking condition and how vage aot of books are
the list above is the chery picked one ive done that have anything worth a long drive to climb, (if your anything like me you dont want to drive 4-5hours to climb a mud pit with no veiw.... Couchsarchraga...)
only thing else i can add for climbs is mt. greylock mass. 3480 feet, a state high point with good veiws and a whitefaceish feel (but nicer atmospher and roads) best climb beats 6-20 ish gains on the ne115 list, nice rustic lodge on top, 20-40$ a night for a bed
thanks for the website and info on it again
Wow - that's a lot of info you've provided there. Thanks - I'll refer to it in the future.
...Andrew
well off the catskill list, the devils path is a gem, dificult and gruling, not as much as katadin, but alot more ledgy then what photos ive seen, 22 miles straight up and down, cumiltive gain of over 10000 feet, about 40 miles road to spot for a one way 5 true smits 2 others close by (hunter and sw hunter) and a 30-40 foot waterfall, its the best the catskills has to offer, best veiw shed is 250 dergrees on south twin, record for a one day on the DP is just over 8 hours, normal time is 12.5 hours or so, 1/2 of attemted one day hikes fail at bagging it in one day (tougher then the great range hike, as all ups and downs are greater then 1000' except for one which is 450', 2 are around 2000' ), if just enjoying the day with less callange is what you want thiers plantly of paths that conect to the ridgline, each peak has atlease a 170 dergree veiwshed, most have multiples (herd paths should be watched for to seee hidden veiws)
slide/ whittenberg/ cornell which you have done is the other real great,
the blackhead range is good, kinda hard, again not as much as somthing like katadin, maybe as tough as the east dix slide in the upper reaches only, 4000 feet total climb with all 3, mayb be a 5-7 hour trip for you
panther/giant ledge is a good one for veiws, kinda ledgy, half day at best for trip time
nothing else would be worth the trip unless you camped, which then the escarpment trail from north/south lake campground is recomended, random good veiws of the hudson from the trail on the edge of the catskills highly treed inn escarpment cliff
bearpen, windham high peak, balsam lake mountian, and katskill high peak have good veiws, (katterskill high peak is like couchsarcraga peak with panther peaks veiw, their is a trail, or beter discribed as a swimming route becuse of all the mud, and deep pooled water on the trail, a wet misrable trail to a steller veiw and a pair of air plane crashes, theirs a sorta bushwack rout that avoids this, follows an old path thats basicly long gone, past a old fort site, and trough a thickish balsam forest to the top) none are fealy full day trips, katterskill can be becuse of the bad trails)
outside of that, the south aderondacks has hadly mountian, which is basicly a lower version of cascade mountian, with better veiws (atlease 300 named peaks are visable), the climb is the same as cascade to the first veiw point from 73, but x2 as steep overall, with better footing, and more slab, and less leggyness
plan 4 hours rt, allowing time for veiws and folling the herd paths on the ridge to the "animals", stone artwork someone with alot of time created, along with mor veiws
poke-o-moonshine is a nice peak (driving south on 87 from canada after the second keesville exit you see big cliffs, this is pokeomoonshine), consider a loop up the "hard" (steeper then cascade, but not realy harder as its short) trail down the easy but longer old jeep road, great veiws up and down lake champlain, and of the greens, along with giant hurricane, jay and whiteface, old fire tower makes veiws alot better, but almost 360 without, between the 2 veiwpoints about .3 miles apart, looking at your "the dads" hike he could handle this one easly (jeep trail would be better for him) (others like this are baxter mountian, and the crows)
belfry mountian- dont make a seprate trip for this one, but if your just driving down into ny for some reason, and have a half hour to wast, go up this for effortless veiws, located 8 miles off the elibethtown exit 200 foot climb, .4 miles
thats my list of the bests i have done, i am working on all the list, but am in climbing more fore everything you see rather then just the list
congrats on your NE 111, any ideas on your next list? Maybe the ADK fire towers (23 of 28, you got 3 or 4 of them done), adk highest 100 (you got around 40 to 50 to go), NY highest 100 (catskillsand aDk range mixed, you got somthing like 40 left) NE highest 100, probly 30ish on that one, Catskill 35 (not a hard list to do for the most part, but 4 that can be as hellish as the adk b-wacks, and alot ledgeyer then alot of the high peaks, less veiws for the most part, but fun none the less (katterskill High peak is easyer to navagate then couchsarchraga peak but muddyer))
Hi, Thomas.
I have occasionally thought about some of the other lists, but... well, I'm ok with a bushwhack once in a while, but I don't want to make too much of a habit of it. I think what I might do instead is find the 'top picks' of these other lists - the ones that have nice summits or interesting but not overly bushwhack-y approaches, etc.

Great trip report and congratulations for your 115th peaks. North Brother do offers very nice view. When I did it two years ago, we were in the clouds. [:-(]
Good luck for your future endeavours.Hi: I always look forward to read your experiences of the wild areas of the country. When you permitted me to join you when I was still a young man it completely changed my ideas of what I had missed. Now as I read your detailed description of what I also would have liked to do I can at least enjoy what you are doing. You will never grow old as long as you can follow your dreams.
