Looking back at Whiteface.
Knowing that it was going to be tight for a daylight descent on the toll road, we didn't tally for long on Esther's summit. We made much better time going back, but even so, we arrived back at the 2nd hairpin of the road (and our skiis) at a few minutes after sunset. By the time we got switched into them and on the road, it was well along towards dusk.

The combination of darkness, an un-groomed track, and our lack of skiing expertise meant we had a slower and rougher time descending the road. Our narrow little non-backcountry skiis didn't help, either. So, instead of enjoying what should have been a 20-30 minute descent took us well over an hour, and we arrived back after 6pm, totally in darkness. Still, Jenn was now down to 12 remaining winter 46er peaks, and we did have a beautiful day out in the mountains.
