Dusk had fallen by the time we reached the end of our walk through the botanical gardens (and we had only scratched the surface of the place - it is quite big). From here a short downhill walk through the old Bolton Street Cemetary (now called the Bolton Street Memorial Park) brought us to the grounds of the New Zealand parliament, where a large conical building was lit up against the growing darkness and which dominated the surrounding buildings. This was the "Beehive", housing the executive wing of the New Zealand government. Surrounding it were various other government buildings and monuments.

With almost eight kilometres of city walking under our belts, we walked back through Wellington's darkening streets to our hotel. We were looking forward to the big crossing of the next day, and the lands of the South Island beyond.
