We reached the rim shortly before sunset. We followed the rim trail north for about 15 minutes, and soon rejoined with our start point near the North Campground. Completely satisfied and amazed by the nearly five-hour nonstop smorgasbord of scenery, we arrived back at our campsite a few minutes later.

The day's cloudiness had completely dissipated at this point, and it was clear by the time the sun set. It continued to be quite cold, however, and fixing our camp dinners proved to be an affair where hot dehydrated meals were esconced in fleece jackets to help warm the body against the chill. The forecast low for the upcoming night was minus 12 degrees Celcius. As twilight fell, we ate dinner sitting in the Explorer.
