We got up in the pre-dawn twilight to make our final decision (about whether or not to do a quick climb to the clifftop viewpoint). The weather had actually improved, and patches and breaks of open sky were beginning to appear. We were still a bit unsure of how easy the trail would be, and we were feeling a bit pinched time-wise, since we had booked a room in the town of Twillingate in Central Newfoundland that night. Reluctantly, after considering everything, we felt it would be best to skip the climb and just head back to the trailhead. The climb to the clifftop viewpoint would have to wait for another visit to Gros Morne.

The skies further cleared as we retraced our steps back towards the trailhead. We chose to bypass a section of overland trail by staying along the shore of the lake, and we were rewarded with stupendous morning views back to the fjord. By 8am we were back at the ford of Western Brook. We now knew the brook-crossing-drill, and were soon back across to the land of super-well-groomed trails.
