Hi, Matt
Nice to meet you. In fact, I think I did consult the summitpost page on Red Breaks. Thanks for your work!
You can see exactly our route by going to the final page of the Red Breaks section of my report (i.e. /Outdoors/TripReports/2011/Utah/?p=main&n=6). You'll see an interactive trackmap there of what we did. I think we came out of Big West Fork early (we were running short of time, in any case). I think perhaps I should go back sometime do the whole of Big West Fork...

Looks like the exact same hike I did in March 2010! Did you use the Summitpost page I made for Red Breaks?
Nice Photos of the Cosmic Ashtray...that sure is one odd feature and you are right to think it isn't volcanic at all. I have also heard it called the Quag Pit but I liked Cosmic Ashtray better so I called it that lol
Did you also hike up through the Big West Fork of Red Breaks?
Hi, Bob.
Thanks for the web page compliment. Glad you found it useful. Good luck on your upcoming trip - let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Andrew & Jenn, .....really enjoyed the trip report, great pics and story line, and I like the new format.
Hi, Steve
Glad you liked the report.
Your pictures are great, too. You did lots of tough stuff - especially Choprock. I hear that is quite a tricky and unforgiving one.
Have fun in the Dolomites, and let me know if you have any questions.

Andrew,
Very cool, I always enjoy your trip reports! My friend and I were in Escalante two weeks before you, and we also explored Red Breaks and what you call the "Cosmic Ashtray". I was calling it "The Volcanco" based on Michael Kelsey's guide book. We also did the exact same loop through Coyote Gulch, although we also hiked all the way up to Steven's Arch (high recommended). We also did technical descents of Neon, South Fork Choprock, and Ringtail Canyons. Here are my pictures and incomplete report.

P.S. I am also going to the Dolomites for two weeks this September, and have found your Via Ferrata pages to be very informative. Thanks!
