Back way from Grant's Pass to Gold Beach [Detail Map]
This backway to the rugged Oregon Coast some positive attributes, and some negative attributes. First, the positive attributes: This road is _really_ twisty over most of its length. We're talking hairpins, endless stretches of tight esses, and lots of blind turns. Scenery is typical west-coast coastal mountains : forested, steeply sloping, moderate altitude. Also, very few people travel on this road. You'll rarely be held up by other traffic.

So, what are the negatives? Well, for one, you'd better be comfortable with narrow roads. The western stretches especially are very narrow: not much wider than one lane in many places. This makes spirited driving tricky - you have to make sure you can see far enough ahead before negotiating a turn at speed. Especially un-nerving is driving along on a road barely wide enough for your car as it is and coming upon a sign that says "road narrows". Hmm... narrows... to what?!!? Single-track?

Pavement quality varies, and can be a bit rough and broken up in spots. Also, there is currently (fall 2004) a section of this road that has been re-routed and is rough, dusty gravel. This seems to be a temporary condition, however, and it appears they are getting ready to pave this section. (total length of this gravel section is perhaps 20 or 30km).
