We set about for the long trudge back to Upper Works. The day got warmer as time ticked along and as we slowly descended to lower and lower elevations. Near the open area at the start of the Calamity Brook trail, the snow started to become downright slushy, and I switched to snowshoes to prevent the trail from getting too chewed up.
We arrived back at the trailhead shortly before 4pm, completing what has got to be just about the optimal Cliff Mountain experience there can be!
P.S. after returning home, Brian fortunately did get a call from Lee Kauffman (the leader of the group we met while bushwhacking on Cliff). His group had indeed found Brian's lost GPS, and Lee graciously shipped it (au gratis) back to him. Many thanks!
