The slide through the trees
At the bottom of the slide it was full springtime conditions -- the temperature had soared and the wind had died down. We quickly de-layered and got ready to make the long trudge back to the Elk Lake trailhead, and from there down to the locked gate (in the winter, the Elk Lake access point is 2 miles / 3km further away).
We made the long, flat trudge back to the trailhead, and from there back down the road to the locked gate, in very good time. Mark and Linda's daughter was waiting for us with their car, and we carefully squeezed ourselves in for the ride back to the trailhead on route 73. Thanks very much, guys, for the lift. It is always fun to do a traverse.
We arrived back at the round pond trailhead to discover that Ewart had made it out safely (always a concern when one is hiking alone). We said our goodbyes, and we headed off to the Noonmark diner for a quick supper.
I'm quite happy to have met you -- Clay, Linda and Mark (and Gordon at the Noonmark diner). A very nice group of winter Adirondack hikers you are, and I hope to hike again with you all soon!
