Evening Camp and Pizza
Sunday, October 5

Our anticipation for dinner at camp tonight was much higher than usual. Chris, as he is often wont to do, had gone way beyond the call of duty and had offered to prepare dinner for all of us. Furthermore, had had lugged a portable oven, all sorts of kitchen implements, charcoal, and fresh ingrediants, all the way from Ottawa. On the menu: pizza. Cooked in-situ, served fresh and hot.

While Chris set about preparations for dinner, Jenn, Rowan and I headed down to the shore of George Lake, which was only a few steps away down a path from our campsite. Now in daylight, we could take in the grandeur of the lake and its cliffy white quartzite backdrop. Paddlers and paddle-boarders lazily plied the waters of the lake on this very warm and still autumn afternoon. It was all quite idyllic.

Back at the campsite, the pizza prep was well underway. Expertly adorned with the tools of perhaps his favorite hobby, Chris was busy chopping up fresh basil, mozzarella, pineapple and pancetta. In various tupperware containers, garlic infused oils and other ingredients. A column of charcoal had been lit, ready to fire the portable kettle oven he had brought. A factory-like operation being executed with factory-like precision.

Soon, pizzas were coming off the grill, hot and steaming. Made-to-order pizzas. Us grateful eaters sat around on camp chairs and picnic tables and savored delicious after delicious hot slice.

By the time dusk approached, we were all stuffed. Nick and I headed off to attend an evening ranger program on local owls; the rest of the gang set about to bake cinammon twists for dessert. By the time we returned from the walk, it had grown completely dark and our crew was sitting around a robust campfire. A perfect meditative wind-down to what had been an excellent day.
