September 16, 2023 - Back to Tracking

Sorry for that digression on the VAT deposits. I needed to tell the story; that was helpful for me. Thank you. But now, let's get back to our fabulous two mid-engined beauties!

The Airtag pings from the Boxster and Cayman were intermittent. Sitting in their steel-lined transport cars on Canada's main east-west trans-canada rail route, they only had very intermittent range contact with iPhone users. Still we occasionally got pings. Progress was good:

September 16, 2023, 11:30pm - The Boxster is detected on the main rail line near Quebec City

September 17, 2023, 10:05am - The Cayman is detected on the main rail line as it approaches Monteal.

September 17, 2023, 11:24am - The Boxster arrives in Monteal.

Nice, nice. All the way to Montreal from the Maritimes in only a couple of days. That meant it wouldn't be too long before the train entered our home province of Ontario. I mused to Luke about how it might be cool to (if we could somehow coordinate it) to drive down to the main rail corridor just to watch the freight train roll by. To know that our two GTS Chronicles Carmine Red machines were sitting inside, only feet away from us, here on Canadian soil. It would be exciting even if we couldn't actually see them.

But the train was too fast for us. Before we knew it, we were getting pings in Ontario, from the Kingston region. And then, a few hours later, in Toronto:

September 17, 2023, 4:19pm - The Cayman is seen passing through Kingston, Ontario.

September 17, 2023, 8:51pm - The Boxster shows up in Toronto. We're not far from the destination railyard where the cars will be unloaded!

Excellent. In the Toronto area already! Basically the train travelled all the way from Eastern Quebec to Toronto in a day. Based on my research, I expected the railcars to end up in CN's Vaughan Autoport yard, which is the central hub where all vehicles from Europe to Ontario got sent. This took a little longer, but soon, the cars showed up as expected:

September 18, 2023 - The Boxster and the Cayman together at the CN Autoport yard in Vaughan, Ontario (a northern suburb of Toronto). The cars will come off of the train at this spot
If you'd like to know a little more about the CN Vaughan Autoport yard, there's a facebook page which gives an overview here.

September 28, 2023 - The Final Leg

A few days later I received an unsolicited email from Michael Maternicki at Porsche European Delivery. Our cars were on a schedule to arrive at Porsche Centre London soon! I passed on the information to Luke.

A couple of days later we saw indications of movement. Eventually multiple pings from both the Boxster and Cayman directly along multiple points on Highway 401 - Canada's (maybe even North America's?) busiest highway. That meant... they were definitely on their way to Porsche Centre London. Fin-all-y.

We spent the rest of the afternoon refreshing (or rather, Luke did, then relayed the updates to me). And then....

September 28, 2023 - The Boxster and the Cayman travel to and arrive at our 'home" dealership: Porsche Centre London in London, Ontario.

Not bad I guess. Could be better. Could be a lot worse.

From: Luke Ward - Sep 28, 2023, 5:04 PM
Seattle delivery would be bad

I really have no guess as to how fast they do PDIs and stuff like that. you would think a week at most, but....

Ok. All right. Excellent. An important milestone. Our twin GTSes were now at our home dealership. Within an hour, we got an email from Christina, saying our cars had arrived. Good. They were giving updates. Next up would be the process to "re-PDI" (Pre-delivery inspection) the cars, and in general, get them ready for use on North American roads.
