Geo and Elvira's Adventures
Wednesday May 15 - Tuesday May 21
From what I can tell, for most of the next week, George and Elvira were taken around by my cousin Anna, to visit various points of interest near Avellino, including downtown Salerno, Naples, and back to the Amalfi Coast. George and Elvira also went back to the Caserta area, where they took in both the Royal Palace and the old town of Caserta itself (both places they had visited before). And, of course, a lot of "visiting" - mostly to and by our innumerable cousins, many of which still live in the general Avellino area. Giovanni took them to visit his sailboat moored in a marina near Salerno, and George also took quite a number of trips into downtown Avellino to just wander around, catching up on the points of note relevant to our family (like, for example, the building where the Perugini family lived during the second world war, before it got bombed out).

Goodbye for now!
And so finally, early on May 21, my mother and my aunt Rosetta had a touching good-bye. Elvira and George then drove with her up to Rome and took a flight (a nearly-missed flight, apparently) directly back to Montreal, Canada. I drove out from Ottawa and met them at the Montreal airport (we had to take my mom out of the secure area for a few hours), where we had dinner and got caught up on what had transpired over the last week. George then asked for (and received) special escort status to bring my mom back through security and to her departure gate for her ultimate destination - Bathurst, NB.

All of the complicated logistics had paid off - we had managed to conduct a pretty successful visit, all told, and as I sit here writing this trip report a few months later, I have a pretty good sense that my mom found it successful, too. And she didn't say no when I floated the idea of doing this again sometime, so.... who knows?

A thousand thanks to my sister Elvira and brother George, who graciously and selflessly agreed to participate and accompany my mom on her trip this year. Much appreciated.

And now, in case you haven't already seen it, here's a four-minute sequence of short video vignettes from our trip:
