This next set of pictures contain images from our climb of Mount Arrowsmith via the Judges Route. Note: the trailhead is located BELOW all the switchbacks on the pass main logging road. The trail starts off by going up an old side logging road. See the photo info details of the photo at the trailhead for detailed latitude and longitude information, along with a satellite map with a pointer.

Judge's Route Trailhead
This is the little side-road off of Pass Main that is the start of the Judges Route. It is a very obvious little road, but there are many little side roads, and this one has minimal markings to let you know it is the right one. Please look at my GPS data to make sure you get the right waypoint for this spot. [enlarge]
Minimal Judge's Route Marking
A shot of the tree that has the flagging and paint that mark the start of the Judges route. Look closely for this! [enlarge]
Old Forest Road and Arrowsmith
A shot of the old forest road leading up towards the trail portion of the Judges Route. Mount Arrowsmith can be seen rising in the background. [enlarge]
At the end of the side logging road, a distinct path leads very steeply uphill through mature forest. The path is in great shape, and switches back and forth up the steep slope. Eventually the trail starts to break out into the open, but it is still fairly obvious to follow.

Steep forest trail
Here, Pu and Jenn start up the forest-trail portion of the Judges Route. [enlarge]
Steep open track
The middle section of the Judges Route climb is a very steep switchbacking trail through nice open forest. [enlarge]
Clear Island Sky
Today we have a beautiful clear sky. Taken on one of the first lookouts on the Judges Route on Mount Arrowsmith. [enlarge]
Forest and Sky
A nice shot of the mature forest against a clear Island sky. [enlarge]
Arrowsmith skyline
Looking up towards the summit knobs of Mount Arrowsmith from partway up the Judges Route. [enlarge]
Ramparts Rising
the smooth, solid sides of the Arrowsmith Massif rise out of the trees and clouds. [enlarge]
Pu on a Lookout
Pu stops at a particularly nice lookout on the way up the Judges Route on Mount Arrowsmith. [enlarge]
Easy Scrambling
Jenn does a bit of easy scrambling on the way up the Judges Route on Mount Arrowsmith. [enlarge]
Arrowsmith Humps
Much of Arrowsmith is composed of these steep but rounded solid sub-summits. [enlarge]
Shady Pass
Here, we are nearing the top. The trail leads up to the notch in the middle of the picture, at which point you can see over to the east for the first time. [enlarge]
Jenn and Pu at saddle
Jenn and Pu arrive at a saddle that spans the north-south main ridge of Arrowsmith. [enlarge]
Pu capturing the moment
Pu captures the beautiful clear mountain views. [enlarge]
Jenn and Pu at lookout
Jenn and Pu at a scenic lookout near the top of Mount Arrowsmith. [enlarge]
A gap to the east
This is a shot looking through a gap that cuts across the main north-south ridge on mount Arrowsmith. You can see the strait of Georgia and the Coast ranges far off to the northeast. [enlarge]
Eventually the main ridgeline separating north from south is reached (and with it, great views). the route goes right and up here, and very shortly reaches the subsummit. This is where the nose route joins in from the north. It is a very short 5 minute hike and scramble to the summit from here.

Weird Subsummit rocket thing
This is one of the two strange rocket-like devices on Arrowsmith. This one is on a lower subsummit. As you can see, it has a door and solar panels. we are not sure what purpose it serves. [enlarge]
Looking down on the Nose
This is a shot looking directly down on the nose route. Yesterday, we climbed to within 50 feet of this very point (but in the clouds). [enlarge]
"The Bumps"
This is a shot, taken from near the summit of Arrowsmith, looking back along the route we took yesterday when we tried to do the nose route. The approach to the nose follows the main ridgeline you see in this picture, over all of the rounded bumps. [enlarge]
The Nose
This shot looks straight down on the 4th class nose route. There are two solid belay anchors (along with some places for protection in between, if you need them). [enlarge]
Looking up to sub-summit
A view looking up to the sub-summit from just above the technical portion of the Nose Route. [enlarge]
Closeup, "The Bumps"
A closeup view of "The Bumps" [enlarge]
Arrowsmith Southern Terrain
A view south from the summit of Mount Arrowsmith, showing the southern aspect of the massif. [enlarge]
Gabriola from Arrowsmith
The small island you see in the distance in this picture is Gabriola Island. Jenn's Parents' place is on to the left, and on the far side. [enlarge]
Eastern Arrowsmith Massif
A wide-angle view east from the summit of Mount Arrowsmith. Our approach route from yesterday along the bumps can clearly be seen in the left half of the picture. [enlarge]
Craggy summit block
A view of the summit block on Arrowsmith from just below the sub-summit. [enlarge]
