Grand Canyon Backpack - Day 1
The New Hance Trail (Continued)
Our descent down Red Canyon continued. At times it seemed like we would never get to the bottom! Distances are very deceiving in the canyon, and what seems like it wouldn't be very far off, is a really really long way away. This concept took a long time for me to get used to.

Rounding a corner
After many long but enjoyable hours of hiking, we reached the bottom of Red Canyon (Red Canyon is the canyon that the New Hance trail descends into). The last bit of the hike was along a fairly flat sandy/gravel creek bed at the bottom of Red Canyon, which was a welcome relief after all the previous hard pounding on the feet.

Finally we reached the Colorado river, and I was surprised to see large sand dunes. I'm not sure what I was expecting...maybe more rocky river beds like at home, but this was a welcome surprise. Unfortunately, the wind had really picked up, so sand got into everything! It was so strong, it blew over our tent, and Andrew had to do some quick re-jigging to securely hold it in place. We had to find some out-of-the wind shelter to cook dinner (which we did). This was also my first try at filtering water. (Our good friend Ewart had kindly lent us this vital piece of equipment for this trip. Thanks, Ewart...if you ever need me to, I would be pleased to filter your water). Caroline gave me a quick demonstration, and I was off! Due to much sediment in the river, the filter had to be cleaned after each litre. A bit of a pain, but very necessary.
Shannon and Brian are almost there
