Buttle Lake Limestone
The thick layers of limestone that underly much of Marble Meadows (and several other locations in Strathcona) is known geologically as the Buttle Lake Limestone. The innumerable bodies of fossilized animals of which the rock is composed was deposited during the Permian period (250-300 million years ago).
