This is the Cappella della Madonna, perhaps one of the most beautiful parts of the Sanctuary. It is dominated by a beautiful Byzantine painting from the year 1261 depicting the Madonna and Christ child. I did not realize it at the time, but this painting had been moved to the main basilica in 1961 and remained there for over fifty years, and had only been very recently (June 25, 2012) restored to its original position.
