This is an example of Newfoundland and Labrador's provincial flower: the Sarracenia Purpurea, or the Northern Pitcher Plant. This is a carnivorous (insectivorous, if you prefer) plant: it has a basin which collects water and which insects cannot climb out of once they fall in. A combination of digestive enzymes and symbiotic bacteria and invertebrates allow the plant to get nutrients from the prey. As seen in marshlands along the Western Brook Pond trail at Gros Morne National Park.
