The Dying Gaul
This statue, known as the 'Dying Gaul', is a copy of a lost Hellenestic bronze sculpture from about 200 BC. The statue itself serves as memorial and reminder of the defeat of the Celts by the Romans. It doesn't seem to be known when the copy was made, but of course it would have to have been before the original bronze sculpture was lost. As seen in the Capitoline Museums in Rome.
