Chris uses one of the many x-terminals scattered around the JavaOne Conference. The x-terminals are Sun Microsystems Sunray 170 "virtual display clients". They have a built-in smart card reader (that reads each attendee's conference card) and which provides an x-display, and access to some basic applications and a web browser (Firefox, of course).
