Reflectoscope Image
This is a 'reflectoscope' image of the Grand Canyon, as taken from the reflectoscope in the Desert View gift shop. It is a highly polished 'black mirror'. According to the sign on the lower left of it, it was invented by a French landscape painter named Claude Lorrain. He used it to condense and simplify the views he sketched. Apparently, very strong light tends to wipe out color while mild light shows it up better... and so the image of the Grand Canyon reflected from this glass is supposed to have stronger colors....
